Challenge review month #2

Stretch: I am currently 12.5 weeks post. My aim was to get to 12 weeks post and pass it. I have achieved this goal with little breakage compared to my last stretch. I will be 13 weeks post on Wednesday and will relax my hair on the Saturday at 13.5 weeks post. This is the end of my stretching challenge and I am happy to say I achieved my goal and looking to stretch up to 16 weeks next time!
The things that helped me during this stretch was S Curl for my roots and water and glycerine mix for the rest of my hair.
Nape: My nape area has been moisturised throughout the month of August I will be reviewing the growth on my relaxer day when am 13.5 weeks post, this challenge will continue until my 1 year anniversary.

Ends: My ends have really picked! I posted a picture of my ends for the GAHL challenge! My personal ends challenge is coming really well, official check in to be done after relaxer and dusting in the next week.

my ended as they were at the start of August 2013

Protective styling: This month was really good, I managed to do my 2 protective styles plus 1 extra. One I had one at a wedding and the other I did on my day to the office, and the final one over the weekend. Thinking of it I am always in a protective style (hair clip) but it’s too boring for the challenge hehehe. See my results below

Protective style for a wedding

Protective style #3

Hairline: This challenge has been going really well. I use castor and peppermint oil every night, at the start I used it twice a day! My hairline has improved, I have been doing this for a month now, my hair line on my left hand side it back to how I know it, it’s just the hair line on my right hand side which needs to continue on this challenge, see pictures below. I am really happy with the state they are in at the moment, but I will continue with the castor oil! Also added some grapeseed oil and rosemary oil to my other mix, this challenge has 2 more months remaining, but the improvements are definitely there

Top: this was my hair line as at 28th July left hand side. Middle: hair line right side 28th August, Bottom: Left hand side 28th August

Overall: Wow, I cannot believe the number of self challenges I am on!!! Hehehe....the biggest improvement has been my hair line! My ends still need to be loved, and for better ends it will come with trimming/dusting, I believe my challenge will help me with good hair practices.
How are your self-challenges going?

Boost of moisture - Mini week Wash

1.     Sectioned hair in 4
2.    Applied Vatika Deep Conditioner hot oil treatment to dry hair, sat with 2 heat caps and cloth shower cap for 2 hours
3.    Detangled with a wide tooth comb
4.    Co-washed with Aussie take the heat conditioner and Herbal Essence Bee Strong Conditioner
5.    Rinsed out
6.    T-shirt dried hair for 1 hour
7.    Sprayed Aussie Hair Miracle Insurance and detangled
8.    Bunned hair and applied gel to edges, tied it with a silk scarf.
9.    Next morning moisturised it with Elasta QP Mango and Olive Butter Moisturiser.
10. Bunned it for the day

I needed a quick moisture boost to my hair last night, I still need to carry out a protein treatment before my relaxer which I will do over the weekend or midweek next week.
My hair was so soft and fluffy and really at this rate, it could go for another week or so, had no idea just having conditioners without all the fuss of tea rinse, oils etc could be so amazing and moisturising, will try incorporate a mid week DC cowash!

Product Haul

Am sure am not supposed to be having a product haul as it is not in line with my monthly goals but oh well.....
1.     Herbal Essence Bee Strong Conditioner – this product was on buy one get one free deal, and am almost out of conditioner, so it happened....
2.    Herbal Essence Hello hydrations Conditioner
3.    Ginger Herbal tea – I am planning on using this for my tea rinse, it comes with a blend of other teas such as peppermint, liquorice root, rose hip, strawberry leaves, sage, basil, birch leaves, nettle, hyssop and walnut leaves, just to name a few (yes the list went on).
4.    Rosemary essential oil – I used to have this but gave it to my mum for her hair.
5.    Rosemary tea
6.    Burdock root
7.    Elasta QP Mango and Butter
8. Vatika Honey, Almond and Aloe Vera Moisturiser - biggest mistake, I should have read the ingredients, 2nd ingredient Paraffin liquidium :( will use it for my length during my relaxer days.
I got the teas because of a blog I read on ‘Relaxed thairapy’. Divachyk spoke of tea rinsing helping moisturise hair?!?!? Now I have been using black tea to do my hair since the start of my hair journey, but moisturising is not a word I would associate with what that tea does to my hair.
I reached out to Divachyk who told me that she has the exact same experience with black tea, however, the teas she uses that are moisturising are marshmallow root, burdock root and slippery elm. So I embarked on a mission to find other herbal teas, and I came across rosemary tea, ginger tea and burdock root! Tada! I quickly bought them.
What hair products have you stocked up?

Am currently 11 weeks post and aiming for a 13 week stretch. My new growth has really set in, have more new growth at the back and crown of my hair.

This was my first time using ginger tea rinse, last week I did a coffee rinse and I really didn’t like it, the coffee smell lingered on for so long. Ginger tea was gentle on my hair and will definitely use it going forward, I didn't have the drying feel i get witg black tea, my hair was soft and fluffy, did my hair feel moisturised....well more moisturised than when I use black tea, however, my DC is loaded with so many oils, so will have to make a review of this after a couple of day.

My hair was in need of a protein treatment this week, it was close to having a moisture overload, thus this wash day has restored my hair protein and moisture balance. Might do a moisturising DC mid week and protein again at 12 weeks post in time from my relaxer at 13 weeks post.

Lessons learnt: Stretching 101

This has been my longest stretch without the use of a ‘permanent’ protective style i.e weaves and braids, I had a setback due to protein overload that results in breaking hair from my pervious stretch, so was out to really do it well this time around. These are the lessons I have learnt during my current stretch

1. Moisture is very important – in order to maintain my moisture levels I M&S more frequently than I usually have done. My new growth at about 7 weeks post really likes S Curl.

2. I started DCing with glycerine – I always add oils in my DC, but I have found that added a little bit of glycerine really draws the moisture into my strands!

3. Tea rinses – Since I have been doing tea rinses I really do not have a problem with shedding hair due to tea rinsing, when I stop I do get shed hairs but it’s not alarming

4. Protein and Moisture ‘balance’ – at the start of my hair journey this statement to me meant, 1 part moisture, 1 part protein, as in really balanced, however, this has been far from it, my hair and most requires more moisture than protein, this ‘balance’ is not an equal like to like balance at all.

5. Protective Styling – my go to protective style was usually a bun, however due to incorrect bunning I suffered thinning hair line and therefore opted for hair clip which is better for my hairline and general hair

6. Castor oil and peppermint oil for the hair line – due to my bad bunning habit I have been using castor oil and peppermint oil to rebuild my hair line, will post one month results soon. Castor oil and peppermint oil really do stimulate growth and thickens the hair strands

7. Ceramides – I have only just started using grapeseed oil in my hair journey about 7 weeks now but I can already say I see the benefits, my hair is much stronger and better moisturised than it was during my last stretch, will never go without ceramides!

8. Finger combing – this I swear by, less hair manipulation = less hair breakage and loss

9. Detangling before washing hair- This has helped me so much, I either detangle after my pre-poo session or DC session if this was my first step, matted hair is no one’s best friend!

10. Loosening my hair after a long day! – Honestly, just giving my hair that breather from the protective styles and hair ties has been so amazing, most people use this time for scalp massages which stimulate blood flow to the head, but honestly I hardly massage my scalp (lazy!!) just letting your hair have a breather at the end of the day has helped me keep my head relaxed!

Learning all this has helped me during my stretch this time round and will be using this going forward.

What stretching techinics do you swear by?

Wash Day - 10 weeks posts

I switched up my wash day procedure to avoid jumping in and out of the shower

1. DC with ORS Hair Repair Conditioner pak, glycerine, grapeseed oil and a little bit of ORS Mayo for 1 hour in a heat cap

Star of the show

2. Detangled hair

3. Rinsed out conditioner

4. Shampooed hair twice with Elasta QP crème conditioning shampoo

5.Coffee rinsed my hair using a spray bottle, let it drip out

6.Applied Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Daily Treatment for 5 mins

7. Rinsed out

8.Applied Tresemme Rich Moisturising conditioner for 5 mins

9.Rinsed out

10. T-shirt dried my hair for 30 mins

11. Sprayed Aussie Miracle Hair Insurance Leave in Conditioner

12.Detangled hair, sprayed tresemme heat protector

13. Blow dried my hair on the cool setting and flat ironed on 180 degrees

14. M&S using ORS Carrot Oil and grape-seed oil

I DCed before I jumped into the shower, now I know there is the argument of DC on dirty hair, but I think the experiment is worth the shot, jumping in and out of the shower is oh so annoying.
The wash day outcome was great, really liked the ORS Hair Repair Conditioner pak, they should do it in normal big tubs, I don't think there is enough in a pak, glycerine is so amazing with DC really got my hair moisturised, like butter. ORS Hair repair nourishing conditioner has protein but right down at the bottom, so it’s most likely very mild. Love the smell, love the slip, love the texture, would definitely buy it again.

I blow dried my hair on cool, I haven’t done this before, my hair was puffy, the new growth is really setting in, my crown and back have a lot of new growth about an inch but my front has less new growth about ½ - ¾ inch. I then flat ironed at 180 degrees my hair was still puffy but tamed, I am currently 10 weeks post and in the home run, 3 weeks to go till am 13 weeks, if it carries on going this well then will try aim for a longer stretch.

Side note, had my first matting of new growth, but sprayed it with the Aussie leave in conditioner and castor oil and I managed to save a lot of my hair. Now am twisting my hair and M&S that way.
How was your recent wash day?

GAHL hair retention challenge

I had joined the GAHL Length retention Challenge which end on the 1st of August but  did not get added to the group in time! Anyway these are my results.
I have broken so many of the rules
1.     I did not take a picture on the 01.02.2013 because I was in a weave
2.    I cut my hair ½ inches on my relaxer day in June
3.    I have missed one DC week!
However:
1.     I kept away from direct heat
2.    I only relaxed once every 3 months
3.    I wore buns 90% of the time
4.    I M&S when needed

My results
The picture quality isn't the best. Feb 13 first picture of the start of my journey, June 13 after 2nd relaxer, Aug 13 flat ironed at 180 degrees, 10 weeks post.
Am proud of myself definitely have some length gained there. I will attempt to join more hair challenges in the future.
I am currently on a personal challenge
1.     Thicker end
2.    Grow out nape
3.    Protective styling
Thanks GAHL for hosting the challenge!

Product review: Aussie Hair Insurance Leave in Conditioner

Product review: Aussie Hair Insurance Leave in Conditioner
Price: £4.99 (Boots/Superdrug) – Usually in a deal 3 Aussie products for £10 (Boots) or 2 Aussie products for £7 (Superdrug)

The product

Promise: Makes weak hair big and strong and give your locks round-the-clock protection with this leave-in super conditioner. It's great for using on damp hair to untangle the most tangled up dos too. A leave-in. A leave-in little miracle that conditions and nourishes hair so it's tangle-free and protected from everyday wear and tear. The secret to happy, confident hair in a bottle.

Native Australian folk have relied on the healing properties of jojoba seed oil for centries. In the 21st century, Aussie has added it to this special conditioner which strengthens and protects hair weakened by the stresses of modern day life.

Ingredients: Aqua, Amodimethicone, PPG-2 Methyl Ether, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Parfum, Polyquaternium-11, DMDM Hydantoin, Disodium EDTA, Polysorbate 80, Aminomethyl Propanol, Citric Acid, Cetrimonium Chloride, Trideceth-12, Simmondsia Chinensis, Linalool, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Benzoate, Sodium Acetate, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Hexyl Cinnamal, Limonene, Benzyl Alcohol, Citronellol, Benzyl Salicylate, Melissa Officinalis, Phenoxythanol, Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, Butylparaben, Propylparaben, Isobutylparaben

My thoughts: This is the first leave in conditioner I have used on my hair journey. The reason I got it is because my other half was using it and he has type 3 hair and wow did it detangle his mini afro (I tell him he is on a journey as well.... I digress)

was playing with my other half's hair, at this length is this not a hair journey??? ;)

As I tangle my hair before washing and after washing it is amazing for detangling my hair, I used to use a home-made leave in conditioner before, for detangling even the ‘most tangled up do’ it really does what it promises. The added plus is it can be doubled up as a heat protector with the silicones.

It contains castor oil and jojoba oil which are all great for the hair also has citric acid making the pH of the product more in line with our hair pH, thus helps cuticles stay closed. I really can’t comment on their other ingredients as my knowledge ends there!

Overall it’s a great leave in a bottle goes a long way and it smells lovely! It’s definitely my go to leave in and have already repurchased it already!

Hair Goals and timelines

I have since been on my hair journey for 7 months now, and I swear I have pressured myself to make my hair grow super fast, I have been looking for sulphur mixes, vitamins (even though am not allowed to be taking any vitamin supplements), etc, and really all this is due to my own doing, I have set myself a goal, it was to get to WL by my 2nd anniversary with full ends. Now I started my hair with should length hair about 2 inches from APL, BSL would be another 4 inches and WL another 4-6 inches, so all in all I was hoping to get 12 inches of growth in 2 year, with blunt ends.....if my hair grows at ½ an inch a month (I feel like mine grows less than this) so in 1 year I can grow 6 inches and if I dust my ends every 3 to 4 months about ½ inch then I cut off about 2 inches a year, so full growth will be 4 inches and this is with no set-backs.... so in 2 years I would have 8 inches of growth and this would be 4 inches below my goal length....setting myself for disappointment....I think so....

After reading Ms Kibibi’s post on realistic goal setting (thanks KLP of stranding our strands for directing me there!), Ms Kibibi blogged about realistic goals, therefore these long term goals can be discouraging and appear to be so far away and unattainable. So what if it does take 2, 3 or 10 years, the time still passes regardless, so set 21 day challenge and slowly make those challenges into habits (thanks Ms Kibibi)! So I have now revised my WL goal to my 4th anniversary if I get 4 inches of growth a year and I need about 12 inches to get to my goal I would say 16 inches in 4 years gives me a comfortable 4 inches to play with, great cushion for me! I swear as soon as I adjusted this goal line, I felt a huge hair load come off me, am now looking forward to enjoying my journey and not worry about my growth amount each relaxer time! Goodbye the hair length slave in me!

In the meantime I will continue on my mini challenges set and post progress each month end

1. Hair line re-growth – check up end August

2. Nape challenge – check up on relaxer day Sept

3. Ends challenge - check up on relaxer day Sept

4. Protective styling challenge – check up end August

Wash day 9 weeks post

My wash day was done on the Saturday morning as I had a wedding in the late afternoon
1.     Pre-pooed with grape-seed oil for 15 mins with a heat cap.
2.    Detangled before washing hair.
3.    Shampooed hair with Elasta QP creme conditioning shampoo
I skipped my usual tea rinse step to experiment, my hair has not been shedding excessively and I wanted to see what would happen if I skipped this step for a week.
6.    I deep conditioned with Vatika Deep Conditioner, adding peppermint oil, lavender oil and grape-seed, I sat with a heat cap for 15 mins and rinsed with cool water.
7.    I t-shirt dried my hair for 30 mins.
8.    After removing the t-shirt I applied Aussie Miracle Insurance Leave in Conditioner and proceeded to detangle.
9.    After detangling applied some coconut oil and tresemme heat pritector to my hair and roller set it
Verdict: I am currently 9 weeks post relaxer, my stretch is going well so far, haven’t had an issue with my NG, so hoping for a smooth stretch, if I can extend it past 13 weeks that will be great! My wash day was significantly shorter, I didn't not have much shedding, but slightly more than on tea rinse days, I can afford to skip tea rinses here and there as I feel like the shedding is normal, the only think I like about tea rinses is it gives my hair a nice brown reddish colour!
How was your wash day and what are your wedding go to styles?

First hair set back - Protein overload & lack of M&S

Signs
Ø  Hair that was dry
Ø  Brittle
Ø  Breaking at the line of demarcation
Story
Ø  I noticed that 2 to 3 weeks before my last relaxer (June 2013) my hair was breaking off like crazy, the hair that was breaking off was long, therefore it was breaking at the line of demarcation and I had breakage mid shaft too. My hair felt dry and crunchy.
Ø  Due to not M&S my new growth my hair was dry, and having protein overload made it worse.
Cause
Ø  I was using ORS Hair Mayonnaise to DC my hair every single week
Ø  I was not moisturising my new growth and length of hair sufficiently enough
Solution
Ø  I got a moisturising conditioner straight away. I thought that ORS Hair Mayonnaise was both a protein and moisturising conditioner, which is probably true, but I was lacking moisture in my regimen, I did not have a proper leave in (before the days of Aussie Miracle Insurance Leave in Conditioner in my life), my shampoo was not a moisturising shampoo, it contained sulphates (I had not started co-washing), my M&S was extremely poor, I would M&S at best twice a week, and not with enough attention. Thinking of it the other thing that saved me was prepooing with a conditioner (Tresemme and Herbal Essence), really that was the only moisture I was getting!!
Ø  When I realised I might be suffering from protein overload (after thin ends and tears and crunchy dry hair on my relaxer day) The funny thing is the breakage from the new growth obviously stopped but my hair was still breaking, and it was still crunchy and felt dry and brittle! I DC with a moisturising conditioner Vatika Deep Conditioner, this instantly reduced breakage. The other funny this is I wasn’t M&S well enough, so my hair was still breaking, not as much as before but it was still breaking nevertheless, I have only just recently had a light bulb moment with my M&S!! At the moment am moisturising my new growth with S Curl No drip moisturiser and my lengths with ORS Carrot oil, I find I don’t need to seal with ORS Carrot oil as it has but a cream and oil, correct me if am wrong. I think my hair is responding well, and I moisturise more often
Things am looking to change
Ø  Buy a moisturising sulphate free shampoo – ElastaQP creme Conditioning Shampoo
Ø  Keep on moisturising with ORS Carrot Oil
Ø  Buy hair bands with no silver clip
Ø  Repurchase Herbal Essence – Hello hydrations for my co washes
Ø  At the moment as I felt I was just getting on my feet with the hair journey I was scheduling my protein and moisturise DC, for now I will be moisturising DC when I feel my hair needs a protein treatment.
I found this very interesting post on Just grow already, which helped me so much in understanding the whole concept of moisture and protein

Product Review – Sensationnel Instant weave Lorena

Price - £11 Local India Hair store; eBay £20

Pictures

Verdict:
Now I have been looking for an instant wig for a while and I saw this on eBay but wasn’t too sure about buying a wig online, I finally found it for half the price at my local Indian hair supply store.
My thoughts, it’s not the best of wigs but hell its £11!! When I don’t feel like doing anything to my hair I just braid my own hair and put it on, I have received a few compliments while wearing it, and it’s a bargain wig, but don’t expect Brazilian type hair, you pay for what you get. It’s 100% synthetic and does tangle, but if you store it well and finger comb it’s a great wig! I have never worn it for more than 2 days at a time, so not sure if it would stand the test of time if I wore it for a month etc.
I love it enough to wear it when I was visiting my boyfriend’s family for the first time, so it’s a keeper in my books, will buy more wigs from this line at this price, but will also try their human hair range.
I would say if you want a quick hair style for those lazy days go for it, if you are looking for a wig to wear in the long term, my suggestions is this is probably not the one for you
Finally, I got it in colour number 4

Pros
1. Price
2. Length (BSL)
3. Quick and secure styling

Cons
1. It sheds and tangles if not stored correctly
2. It’s not human hair
3. As it has combs, be careful with the removing of this wig to avoid tearing your own hair out – this goes for all wigs!

8 weeks post relaxer - Wash day

 1. Shampooed hair with Elasta QP creme conditioning shampoo (new product) this product is a sulphate free shampoo

2.I then black tea rinses my hair using my spray bottle, so far this is my favourite way of doing tea rinses, it gets it right to the scalp and on every section.
3. Applied Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Daily Treatment for 5 mins then rinsed.

4. I deep conditioned with Vatika Deep Conditioner (this contains henna) and added some peppermint oil for my scalp and grape-seed oil and lavender oil. I sat with a heat cap for 15 mins and rinsed with cold water.

5. I t-shirt dried my hair for 30 mins.

6. After removing the t-shirt I applied Aussie Miracle Insurance Leave in Conditioner and proceeded to detangle.

7. After detangling I pinned my hair and left it to aired.

8. Sectioned my hair in 3 M&S with ORS Carrot oil and coconut oil.

Verdict: I am currently 8 weeks post relaxer, my new growth is too manageable at this time, this surprises me as during my last stretch I swear I was ready to relax my hair at this stage.

Challenge Review – Month #1

Stretch
My stretch has been going well, I am now 8 weeks post relaxer, and aiming to get to 12 weeks post this month
Expectation: 8 weeks post – Achieved
Issues: My new growth started acting up at 5 weeks posts, it was dry, I started using S Curl No drip moisturise which did help, I was moisturising my hair every day, which I think was a bit too much, as I had a lot of product build up. This month I will listen to my hair and moisturise when needed.
Goals for August: Get to 12 weeks post and baby my new growth

Nape
I have been M&S my nape with S Curl No drip Moisturiser and ORS Carrot Oil.
I make sure I also have a silk bonnet on and sleep on a silk pillow case. So far I think my nape is getting strong and I have not noticed any breaking off. No other issues with my nape, will continue doing what I am doing.
Ends
I have been M&S my ends and protective styling them. I have used direct heat once this month, but I don’t think this should be an issue. I will continue doing what I am doing and most importantly protective styling!
Protective Styling
I did do 2 new protective styles in this month.
One was for my friend’s wedding (midweek wedding in the Mountains of North Wales)

Protective style #1 Bun with crown
The other is an instant weave, which I am loving the ease of. I will be posting a detailed review of this product soon.

Protective Style #2 - Instant Weave

Overall
I feel my challenge is going well, however, I have noticed that I am now a victim of improper bunning and protective styling! My buns have been too tight, my hair line has suffered because of it. So in addition to the 3 challenges I have for myself I will be doing a hair line challenge which I got from www.phrophro.com/hlc/. As it’s still a sensitive topic for me, I had noticed that my hair line was thinning but thought maybe it is in my head, and over the weekend my bf mentioned that I shouldn’t manipulate my hair as the front is thinning :-( prior to my hair journey I have not had issues with thinning hair lines and I use to weave my hair and straighten my hairline all the time!!!!

I have taken a picture of my starting point and will show the results after 3 months to see what improvements I have made

Additionally to using castor oil and peppermint oil every-day I will also

1.     Not apply any relaxer to hairline

2.    Use hair clips for protective styling and not hair ties

3.    Use much looser protective styles.
