Dandruff oh Dandruff

I have been having a dandruff and tender scalp proble this past 2 weeks after my relaxer.

I have been moisturising and sealing my hair more often than normal and also apply an oil on my scalp.

Last week, I clarified my scalp and hair to help with this, but after 2 days the tender scalp and itchiness was back again.

I will try using peppermint essential oil in my prepoo this wash day.

My hair has been under a wig all week, so my scalp and hair have been protected.

I really wonder what this could all be about, am really putting it down to my new relaxer :( will see how the peppermint prepoo works. I have read from other blogs how they found this helpful with dandruff and itchy scalp. I will also use my ginger tea blend as ginger has amazing fungal properties.

Happy Hair Journeys Ladies! :o)

    1. Hi Peace! Great to hear that your dandruff issue has come to an end! I have never heard of swissgarde, but peppermint oil and menthol would be a great remedy! I used peppermint oil for my prepoo this wash day and also used ginger tea rinse, my dandruff and itchy scalp has stopped phew, will try having a midweek wash and using the same approach. Thanks for your comment!

  3. Yuck! Flakes suck. Peppermint, rosemary, and eucalyptus always helps me with flakes.

  4. Congrats on your anniversary. your progress is very visable.

Remember dandruff is not same as a dry scalp. As you say your self it is fungus. It shouldn't be treated as dry scalp or scab.

Maybe you should try to air your scalp more. Stay away from wigs and maybe not even wear a scarf during the nights for a while. Fungus like warmth and moisture.

If you can and like it you can try to eat more natural yoghurt with culture in it. And cut back on sugar and sweeteners much as you can. That can nourish the fungus.

I would also skip oil on the scalp. As you know oil seals. That means it also seals your scalp and it can't breathe properly. The scalp is the only alive thing on your head( in opposite to hair) and you need to treat it totally different to your hair. I suggest you wash it twice a week with black soap ( make sure it is the real one) and massage aloe Vera on your scalp. No oils. If you have serious dandruff, you need to consult a doctor and they will give you shampoo that works.

Good luck and again congrats! You are on your way!

    1. Hi Lisa! Thank you for your comment and very helpful ideas. Also for pointing out the difference between a fungal infection and dandruff, I had never thought of it till your comment. Fortunately I do not think I have a fungal infection, more an irritated scalp due to my relaxer, I used a brand I do not usually use, also I have started using a new shampoo and moisturiser, I have never used before, so the issue could also be product related, from assessing my scalp I don’t appear to have any fungal growth or scalp sores, so I think/hope the problem isn’t as serious. However, I did use peppermint oil and ginger tea rinse in my wash day and I have stopped the use of any new product, with the exception of my DC and I must say my scalp feels significantly better. I will however keep away from the wig, have a midweek wash and keep away from oiling my scalp, thank you very much for all your tips and taking the time. But as you have mentioned if it does get serious, I will definitely be popping to my doctor’s!

  5. Glad to see the peppermint and tea seems to be giving you some relief. I usually use a combo of peppermint, rosemary, and tea tree oils when my scalp gets that way. I hope it continues to get better! I know I hate when me scalp feels that way.
