My product staples – series 2 – the deep conditioners

This is my second series of product staples; I have decided to undertake these series to help me out with thinking through and finding the perfect stable. So far with the shampoo series, I have now been thinking of a milder shampoo to my usual ORS Creamy Aloe Shampoo, a shampoo that has a sulphate composition for clarifying, this was all from your lovely ladies comments, so thank you!
In this series I will be looking at deep conditioners and protein treatment.

Protein Conditioner
As far as protein treatment goes, I have only ever tried ORS products, the ORS Replenishing pak and ORS Hair Mayonnaise; I am totally sold on ORS Hair Mayonnaise. ORS Hair Mayo is a medium protein treatment, it can be upped the scale will an egg; however, I have not tried this before. I personally feel that any other conditioner stronger than this would be too strong for my hair, and I have had nightmare of my hair breaking off due to protein overload (wait....it’s happened before)!

I protein treat my hair about once a month, that is when am clarifying my hair. I have used this product almost all my life! I have never tried any stronger protein but something tells me am protein sensitive, also I don’t really like the way my hair feels after a tea rinse which I believe is the closest resembles to how it feels after a hard protein treatment. Anyway, bottom line is if it aint broke don’t fix it.......right......?

Moisturising Deep Conditioner
I moisturise DC my hair on a weekly basis. When am not protein treating my hair I am using a moisturising conditioner, I use this more than my protein, my hair wants more moisture than it wants protein. I tend to add oils to this conditioner and use it under a heat cap for 30 mins minimum. At the moment I have just finished my extremely large Vatika Deep Conditioner Hot oil treatment, though it worked really well when I added glycerine to it but on its own I didn’t feel like it penetrated my strands well enough, however, it still saved me from my protein overload so I do have a soft spot for it. It however has henna in it might not be the best weekly DC to use.....any thoughts?

I am still toying with moisturising DC, I think I have found my con sitting on the shop isles it has behentrimonium chloride very high on its list and is a masque, Herbal Essence Hello Hydration hair masque. I have never seen Herbal Essence hair masque, but if it’s the DC version of the conditioner, am intrigued!

What protein treatment and DC do you swear by and has anyone used a masque?
Happy Hair Journeys Ladies! :-)

  1. For hard protein treatments, I turn to Nexxus Emergencee. For strengthening conditioners, I love Nexxus Keraphix. But Halka Baba de Caracol is possibly the best balanced conditioner that I've ever used.

I haven't seen the HE Hello Hydration Mask either, so I'm totally intrigued.

    1. Wow! I have never heard of a strengthening con, would tht just be like a protein treatment? I am hoping the HE mask will be good, it looked amazing ingredients wise and was not pricy as well!

    2. Strengthening/protein conditioner---It's kinda the same difference. Keraphix isn't as strong as Emergencee or Aphogee 2-Step; but it's not a moisturizing conditioner either.

I'm going to keep an eye out for the HE Mask. Thanks Yvonne for encouraging my product junky ways. SMH!

  2. I love ORS Hair Mayonnaise! It's just right for a quick protein fix. For Moisturizing DC I really like Kenra Moisturizing conditioner and ORS Naturals Moisturizing DC. I've never done a hard protein treatment. Like you, I'm worried it might be too much for my hair. Great post, Yvonne!

    1. I have seen the ORS moisturising con, but I need to try it! Kenra con always has great reviews it's about £10 in the UK about $15 that is almost 3 times my regular con. But am dying to try it. For now I think hard proteins treatments will stay on the side. The fear is great hehe. Thanks for your comment Andrea

  3. Even though Aphogee 2 Step Protein Treatment stinks, it works and it makes my hair so much stronger and yup its a strong protein DC. I always follow up with a great Moisturizing DC but right now i'm in love with Neutrogena Triple Moisture Deep Recovery Mask, it makes my hair feel like butter. I have used the ORS Mayo but i can't stand the strong perfume smell, gives me a headache

    1. I have heard such great things about Neutrogena triple moisturising mask! I have been on the hunt for this product. Do you know what the difference of a DC and a mask is, the HE product I have been eyeing is a mask too, am hoping it can turn my hair into butter 😀

  4. As far as protein goes, I use the ApHogee 2 step the week before my relaxer and ApHogee 2 minute keratin as my mid-step protein treatment (except this past relaxer). I also use the KeraPro Restorative Treatment as my protein treatments throughout my relaxer stretch.

For the most part, I err on the side of moisture by using deep conditioners with my fave being my Alterna Caviar and Silk Elements MegaSilk conditioner and protein leave-ins such as Redken Anti Snap or ApHogee Green Tea Keratin Reconstuctor. I tend to be protein sensitive, so I limit protein as much as possible.

    1. I have used KeraPro Restorative Treatment just the once though, but thought it was great!
I also err on the side of moisture, lost hair due to protein overload, that was a scary time.
As for Alterna Caviar I have never been able to find that con in the UK.
Am scared these posts to wake up the product junkie in me! heheh
